One of my favourite moments from the original anime series of Sailor Moon, was when Princess Serenity's true identity was revealed. It was this amazing emotional moment, as Tuxedo Mask is injured, Sailor Moon's tears become the Silver Crystal and that transforms into her former identity as Princess Serenity.
Sailor Moon Crystal, a more faithful adaption of the manga has totally trumped the 90's anime and had me sobbing all the way through the episode as the new anime has a much more serious tone. In the Sailor Moon Crystal version after Tuxedo Mask is injured, Sailor Moon becomes distressed and begins to remember her previous life where Endymion died protecting her, thus revealing both Princess Serenity and the Silver Crystal that was sealed with her.
She uses the light of the crystal on Tuxedo Mask but he doesn't appear to wake up, and after an attack from Queen Beryl, he is snatched away by Kunzite. Usagi's grief over losing Mamoru shakes me right to the core, it's beautiful and heartbreaking. The way the girls comfort and support her is also a really lovely. The bond between the girls is much more evident in the manga and that translates over into Sailor Moon Crystal as well.
Mamoru is held hostage by the enemy after being fatally wounded but kept alive because they believe he absorbed the Silver Crystal. I always enjoyed the role reversals in the Sailor Moon series, where Mamoru is usually the one that needs rescuing when it comes to the final boss battles, instead of the tired old trope of captured females.
In episode 10, we should get a scene that was omitted from the 90's version of the anime. At least I'm hoping it's in there, as it's quite a powerful and tragic detail from the manga.
This image set is dedicated just to Serenity and Endymion ~ Enjoy!
